Nancy La Vigne, dean of the Rutgers-Newark School of Criminal Justice (SCJ), has been selected as the 2027-2028 President-Elect of the American Society of Criminology (ASC), an international organization whose members pursue scholarly, scientific, and professional knowledge concerning the measurement, consequences, prevention, control, and treatment of crime and delinquency.

As President-Elect, La Vigne will lead the ASC Executive Board, which is responsible for forming the policies and practices of the organization. Other responsibilities include overseeing the strategy and direction of the society, developing the ASC Annual Meeting program, managing ASC’s budget and audits, overseeing the society’s research publications, as well as managing personnel and committees of the association.

“I’m deeply honored by the confidence that ASC members have placed in me,” said La Vigne. “I look forward to working with ASC leadership, including my Rutgers-Newark SCJ colleagues, Ebony Ruhland and Andres Rengifo, who are continuing their service on the ASC Executive Board.”

A member of ASC since November 1993, La Vigne will begin a year as President-Elect in November 2026 before stepping into the role of President of ASC in November 2027.

Prior to her appointment as Dean of SCJ, La Vigne was the presidentially appointed Director of the National Institute of Justice, a senior fellow at the Council on Criminal Justice, and led the Council’s Task Force on Policing. La Vigne also served as Vice President of Justice Policy at the Urban Institute and as executive director for the congressionally mandated bipartisan Charles Colson Task Force on Federal Corrections Reform. La Vigne’s research has focused on criminal justice evaluation, prisoner reentry, policing, body worn cameras, crime prevention, and the spatial analysis of crime and criminal behavior.
