Ronald V. Clarke Visiting Scholar Program

This visiting scholar program honors the scholarly legacy of SCJ’s former dean and professor emeritus, Ronald V. Clarke. It is designed to bring distinguished senior scholars with expertise in environmental criminology, situational crime prevention, wildlife crime prevention, and/or crime science to the School of Criminal Justice to advance research, mentor students and faculty, and enrich the intellectual life of the school through workshops and public engagement. Fellows join a vibrant community of scholars committed to rigorous research and meaningful public impact.

Each fellow receives a competitive funding package that may include:

  • Stipend support
  • Research allowance for travel, data, materials, or conferences
  • Program support for workshops and related events
  • Relocation or housing assistance, as available

Support levels vary depending on whether the fellowship covers a single semester or the full academic year.

Applicants may propose:

  • Full Academic Year Residency
  • Single Semester Residency

Appointments may begin in September 2026 or January 2027.

Workshops (Required):
Fellows deliver two workshops per semester. Workshops are designed for graduate students and faculty and emphasize advanced scholarly skills, research methods, policy relevance, or topical expertise.

Research Progress (Required):
Fellows pursue a substantial research project during their residency and provide a brief summary at its conclusion. Research collaboration with SCJ faculty and/or students is highly encouraged.

Community Engagement (Expected):

  • One public lecture or research talk
  • One mentoring session for graduate students or junior faculty
  • Participation in selected campus discussions or events as appropriate

Candidates should be:

  • Tenured associate or full professors, or equivalent senior scholars
  • Recognized for research excellence and academic leadership in the areas of scholarship that align with Ron Clarke’s scholarly legacy
  • Interested in collaboration, mentoring, and public engagement

Applicants must submit:

  1. Curriculum vitae
  2. Research statement describing goals for the residency and how they align with Ron Clarke’s scholarship
  3. Workshop plan with proposed titles and brief descriptions
  4. A list of three references with contact information
  • Research excellence and potential contributions
  • Quality and relevance of proposed workshops
  • Fit with the School of Criminal Justice’s priorities
  • Feasibility of the residency plan
  • Application deadline: April 1, 2026
  • Review period: April and May
  • Notification: Late June
  • Start date: September 2026 or January 2027
