Daniela Ovelar

SCJ STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

The School of Criminal Justice is proud to highlight standout student Daniela Ovelar. Daniela hails from Somerville, New Jersey, transferred to Rutgers-Newark from Raritan Valley Community College and is entering her senior year pursuing a BS in Criminal Justice. In addition, Daniela will complete a minor in Psychology and is part of the Honors College. While achieving academic success, she has also earned impressive field work experience after serving two high-profile internships as an undergrad. Her career goal is to work with a federal agency as a special agent or a deputy. SCJ celebrates Daniela and recognizes her commitment to racial and social justice.

This summer, Daniela was a part of the Rutgers Eagleton Washington Award Program where she interned with the US Marshals in Arlington, Virginia. She actively participated in a group that took field trips to various related federal government agencies and courts as well as historical monuments.

Some of her projects included:
– Assisted in developing and executing the agency-wide recruitment strategy across 94 districts. 
– Reviewed promotion policies and procedures to develop recommendation proposals to assist employees’ promotion efforts and for the Agency to establish a more objective promotion process. 
– Researched and analyzed agency demographic data for 6,000 employees to establish data driven solutions for targeted workforce initiatives. 
– Assisted in the configuration of body camera kits for 4,000 USMS Deputies.

Daniela also interned with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) where she:

– Researched utilizing social media platforms to conduct research on ATF targets of interest.
– Participated and observed how ATF works jointly with other federal agencies on cases.
– Observed operational brief for a controlled purchase. 
– Explored firearm training for Special Agents.
