Bill Introduced to Allow ‘Dreamers’ to Become Police Officers in NJ

Erik Amaro, an alumnus of Rutgers SCJ who graduated in 2021 and 2022, characterizes himself as a persistent individual dedicated to advocating for New Jersey’s immigrant community, particularly those under the DACA program, often referred to as Dreamers.

After much work, a bill has been introduced by the New Jersey State Senate aimed at facilitating Dreamers’ paths to becoming police officers and utilizing the knowledge gained from the Rutgers-Newark School of Criminal Justice. Because of this, Amaro is seeking assistance in identifying Dreamers interested in pursuing careers in law enforcement who would be willing to share their stories during the senate hearing.

Amaro will provide his own testimony on how this legislation would positively impact his life and pave the way for others in similar circumstances.

Read about the proposed bill here: https://www.njleg.state.nj.us/bill-search/2024/S2439

If you are interested in speaking with Amaro about the bill or sharing your story, please email him at erik.amaro@rutgers.edu.
