Bio

Amy Poland, Ph.D., is the associate dean for online learning and an associate professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at St. Joseph’s College.

She began her career in criminal justice working with juvenile offenders in a residential treatment facility in Sioux City, Iowa while she finished her Masters in Public Administration. She completed a Ph.D. in criminal justice and taught at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, and Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas.

Dr. Poland utilizes technology in both her classroom and research. She is one of the inaugural Technology Fellows at St. Joseph’s College, teaching her students this semester how to create infographics and Storify stories related to material they are studying in Correctional Rehabilitation.

Dr. Poland participates in SJC Long Island’s Faculty Technology Committee, Curriculum Committee, Online Steering Committee and the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee. She has presented workshops across Long Island on the use of Prezi and other educational technology in the classroom, for small business, and for social media and public relations professionals.

Among her published works, Dr. Poland has written chapters for Women in the Criminal Justice System: Tracking the Journey of Females and Crime (CRC Press/Taylor & Francis Publishing) and Serial Offenders: Theory and Practice (Jones & Bartlett Publishers). Currently, she is working on papers on the use of memoir writing in a criminal justice class and public reactions to live trial blogging. She has both led and joined Photo Walks here on Long Island and is working with Herstory Writers Workshop to help deliver Writing for Justice workshops with St. Joseph’s College and Patchogue-Medford students.
