Bio

Dr. Carla Denise Coates is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Florida Memorial University. Dr. Coates earned her doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in 2010, concentrating in crime and deviance and Africana studies. Her dissertation, “Predictors of Drug Treatment Completion Among Black Women: A Black Feminist Intersectionality Approach,” was unanimously nominated for the “Best Dissertation Award” and has received multiple fellowships, which include awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), the Emerging Scholars Interdisciplinary Network (ESIN), and the University of Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s “Frederick Douglass Teaching Scholars Fellowship.” Dr. Coates has also served on the National Advisory Committee for the U.S. Department of Justice and is a member of multiple criminology and criminal justice professional organizations.
