Phi Theta Kappa Recipients

2021

Joseph Detoro
The experiences of a recent recipient of this award reflect the difference this award makes. Joseph graduated high school in 2015 but did not have the financial resources to attend college. He worked full-time for several years, then entered Middlesex County college. He continued to work full-time and earned an Associates Degree with a 4.0 GPA. The PTK scholarship made it possible for him to attend Rutgers and to reduce his employment to part-time. He has continued to be successful, earning a 4.0 GPA at the SCJ and preparing for what he hopes is a job with the New Jersey State Police. As Joseph noted in his thank you letter for the award, he hopes that he can use the knowledge he gained at Rutgers, “to be a role model within law enforcement as someone who is able to show compassion while dealing with various stressful situations and who wants to serve all members of the community in an honest and transparent manner.”
